National Aquarium Sleepover Guide: Tips & What to Bring

Table of Contents

I’ll be honest… when I booked the National Aquarium Sleepover, I had one goal.

I wanted to wake up with a front-row view of sharks, stingrays, and thousands of colorful fish swimming right outside my sleeping bag.

In my mind, I pictured opening my eyes to one of the most beautiful aquarium views imaginable.

Well… that’s not exactly what happened.

But here’s the thing…

Even though my expectations didn’t quite match reality, this still turned out to be one of the most memorable family adventures we’ve experienced.

Spending the night inside the National Aquarium isn’t just about sleeping next to sharks. It’s about experiencing one of the country’s best aquariums after the crowds have gone home, learning from the incredible educators, exploring behind the scenes, and making memories your kids will be talking about long after the trip is over.

If you’re wondering whether the National Aquarium Sleepover is worth it, what to bring, where you’ll sleep, how overnight parking works, or what actually happens after check-in, you’ve come to the right place.

I’m sharing everything I wish I had known before our visit including a few surprises, plenty of laughs, and my honest opinion about whether I’d do it again.

1. Is the National Aquarium Sleepover Worth It?

If you’re asking me… yes.

But whether it’s worth it really depends on what’s important to you.

The National Aquarium Sleepover costs $130 per person or $105 per person for National Aquarium members.

That price includes:

  • Two days of aquarium admission
  • Exclusive after-hours access to the aquarium
  • Educational programming led by aquarium staff
  • A guided behind-the-scenes experience
  • Animal encounters and interactive learning opportunities
  • A 4D Immersion film
  • Evening snack
  • Breakfast the following morning
  • An unforgettable opportunity to sleep inside the National Aquarium

For me, there were two things that made this experience completely worth it.

1. Experiencing the aquarium without the crowds

The National Aquarium attracts thousands of visitors every day, and I’ll be honest. Huge crowds aren’t really my thing. I get overwhelmed and overstimulated pretty quickly.

The sleepover gave us the chance to explore the aquarium after hours with a much smaller group. It felt quieter, more relaxed, and honestly a little exclusive. We had more time to enjoy the exhibits, ask questions, and take everything in without feeling rushed.

That alone made the experience worth it for me.

2. You get two days at the aquarium

One of the biggest perks is that your sleepover admission includes access to the aquarium the day of your sleepover and the following morning.

My recommendation is to arrive when the aquarium opens, spend the day exploring, leave your overnight bag in the car, and return at 6:30 p.m. for check-in.

You’re essentially getting two days of aquarium fun with one admission, which I think adds a lot of value.

Would I do it again? Absolutely.

2. Who Can Attend the National Aquarium Sleepover?

The National Aquarium Sleepover is open to children ages 8 and older.

I think this experience is perfect for families who enjoy unique adventures and don’t mind giving up a little sleep for an unforgettable memory.

If your kids love sharks, marine life, hands-on learning, or have ever wondered what happens inside the aquarium after everyone goes home, they’re going to love this experience.

And honestly, I think the adults have just as much fun as the kids.

Insider Tip: If you can, invite another family or a few friends to join you. The experience is even more fun when the kids have friends to explore the aquarium with, and the adults get to enjoy the adventure together too. Our group was small, which made the experience feel more personal, but I can definitely see how sharing this unique overnight adventure with friends would make it even more memorable.

3. What to Bring to the National Aquarium Sleepover

My biggest piece of advice?

Pack smart and keep it as light as possible.

You’ll be carrying your belongings throughout the evening, so having everything organized will make the experience much easier.

I recommend bringing:

  • A wagon or a large rolling suitcase to carry all of your belongings.
  • Sleeping bag
  • Pillow
  • Small air mattress (optional)

Air mattresses are allowed. I personally didn’t bring one because I didn’t want to deal with carrying it around. Looking back, I probably should have. It definitely would have made sleeping on the floor a little more comfortable.

Clothing

  • One pair of pajamas
  • One change of clothes for the next morning
  • Crocs or flip-flops
  • Light sweater (the aquarium can get chilly overnight)

Toiletries

Remember, there are no showers available, so keep that in mind when packing.

I recommend bringing:

  • Toothbrush
  • Toothpaste
  • Face wash
  • Hair essentials
  • Lotion
  • Washcloth
  • Baby wipes or body wipes to freshen up before bed and again in the morning

Don’t Forget

  • Portable charger (this is a must!)
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Snacks
Insider Tip: There are very few places to charge your phone, and once the lights go out for the night, the outlets are no longer available. If you plan on taking lots of photos or videos, a portable charger will be one of the best things you pack.

4. Before You Arrive: Food, Parking & Check-In Tips

There are a few things I wish I had known before arriving, so hopefully these tips help you prepare.

Arrive Early

One of the biggest perks of the National Aquarium Sleepover is that you can explore the aquarium all day before your overnight experience begins.

My recommendation is to arrive when the aquarium opens, spend the day exploring, and leave your overnight bag in the car. You won’t need it until check-in at 6:30 p.m.

Eat Before Check-In

If you have time, I highly recommend eating dinner before you arrive.

We didn’t have enough time, so we grabbed food from the Aqua Café after checking in. We ordered two personal pizzas, two lemonades, and one bottled water, and spent about $55.

If you’re looking to save money, pack a few snacks and bring a reusable water bottle.

Overnight Parking

If you’re driving, have your parking ticket ready when you check in. The aquarium staff will validate it, bringing the overnight parking cost down to $10.

Complete Your Waiver Ahead of Time

Every participant is required to complete a waiver before the sleepover.

I recommend filling it out before you arrive. It only takes a few minutes and makes the check-in process much faster.

Insider Tip: If you can, invite another family or a few friends to join you. The kids will have even more fun exploring the aquarium together, and it makes the entire overnight experience even more memorable for everyone.

5. What Happens During the National Aquarium Sleepover?

Check-in begins at 6:30 p.m., and from the moment you arrive, everything is well organized.

After checking in, the staff will:

  • Validate your parking ticket
  • Check that everyone has completed their waiver
  • Give each participant a wristband to wear throughout the evening
  • Direct you to a storage room where you can leave your belongings until it’s time to set up your sleeping area

Before the programming begins, you’ll have a little free time to grab food from the Aqua Café (if you didn’t eat beforehand), enjoy a sweet treat, and settle in.

The fun officially begins around 7:30 p.m.

Our evening started at Dolphin Discovery, where we got to see the dolphins up close while learning from their trainers and animal care team. This was one of the most educational parts of the evening. We learned more about the dolphins, their behaviors, how they’re cared for, and even had the opportunity to ask questions throughout the presentation.

After Dolphin Discovery, we headed to the 4D Immersion Film.

This wasn’t your typical movie. The 4D effects made it a fun and interactive experience, and it was a nice break before continuing the rest of the evening’s activities.

After the movie, our group of about 35 people was divided into three smaller groups, each with its own educator.

I actually loved this because it made the experience feel much more personal. We weren’t trying to keep up with a huge crowd, and everyone had the opportunity to ask questions along the way.

One of my favorite parts of the night was going behind the scenes to see where the sharks are fed. We even got to walk out onto the platform above the shark habitat.

I’ll be honest… the entire time I kept thinking, “Please don’t let me fall into the shark tank.”

From there, we continued exploring different exhibits while learning more about the animals from the aquarium staff. It never felt rushed, and the educators were incredibly knowledgeable.

6. Where Do You Sleep During the National Aquarium Sleepover?

Around 10:30 p.m., we returned to the storage room to grab our belongings before heading to our sleeping area.

This was the moment I had been waiting for all night. I am a tired adult, okay!

Families had the opportunity to choose where they wanted to sleep. During our sleepover, the available sleeping locations were:

  • Shark Alley
  • Blacktip Reef

We chose Blacktip Reef because I had one goal… I wanted to wake up to a beautiful view of the massive aquarium window filled with colorful fish.

Well… that didn’t exactly happen.

One thing I wish I had known before the sleepover is that once everyone settles in for the night, the exhibit and tank lights are turned off. The sleeping areas become very dark and remain that way throughout the night and into the morning.

So, if you’re picturing yourself waking up to sharks and colorful fish swimming by, just know that you probably won’t get that postcard-perfect view.

Even though I was a little disappointed, it didn’t take away from the experience. Sleeping just steps away from one of the aquarium’s largest exhibits was still something I’ll never forget.

But, can they fix this? Because having that view was truly important to me.

My Biggest Struggle

I’ll be honest…

The hardest part for me wasn’t sleeping at the aquarium. It was sleeping on the floor.

If you’re a little OCD like me, you might understand. All I could think about was how many people walk through the aquarium every single day.

I sat in a chair for a while watching my kids happily roll out their sleeping bags while, I questioned every life decision that had brought me there.

Eventually, I got over it… and I’m glad I did.

Insider Tip: If you’re debating whether to bring a small air mattress, I’d say bring it. I skipped it because I didn’t want to carry the extra bulk around, but looking back, I think the extra comfort would have been worth it.

7. The Morning After

If you’re hoping to sleep in… this probably isn’t the experience for you. 😂

The wake-up call starts around 6:30 a.m., giving everyone time to pack up their sleeping area before breakfast.

And yes, you will use the bathroom, wash your face, brush your teeth and change your clothes.

Once everyone is ready, you’ll head to breakfast before participating in one last educational program with the aquarium staff.

After the morning program, it’s time to leave. But don’t rush to your car just yet.

One of the best parts of the National Aquarium Sleepover is that you still have time to explore the aquarium before heading home. Since your admission includes the day of your sleepover and the following morning, you can revisit your favorite exhibits, take more photos, or see anything you may have missed the day before.

For us, it was the perfect way to end the experience. The aquarium was still relatively quiet, and we enjoyed taking our time before making the drive home.

Insider Tip: Before you leave, stop by the gift shop if you’re planning to buy souvenirs. It’s much less crowded in the morning than it is during the day, making it easier to browse without the crowds.

9. My 2 cents!

The National Aquarium Sleepover was unlike anything we’ve ever experienced as a family.

Was it perfect? No.

I wish I had brought an air mattress, and I definitely wasn’t prepared for sleeping on the floor. I also imagined waking up to brightly lit aquarium tanks filled with colorful fish, but that’s not how the experience works.

Even with those little surprises, I would absolutely do it again.

Watching my kids explore the aquarium after hours, learning directly from the educators, going behind the scenes, and spending the night inside one of the best aquariums in the country created memories we’ll never forget.

If you’re looking for a unique family adventure that’s educational, interactive, and completely different from a typical hotel stay, I highly recommend adding the National Aquarium Sleepover to your family’s bucket list.

Just remember to:

  • Pack light.
  • Bring an air mattress if you have one.
  • Don’t forget a portable charger.
  • Complete your waiver before arriving.
  • Invite another family to make the experience even more fun.

And if you’ve been following me for a while, then you already know… I don’t do sleepovers.

So, if anyone ever wants to invite my kids to one, this will probably be the only sleepover I’ll say yes to…

Because I’m coming too.

Now that’s my kind of sleepover.

Enjoy every moment, make the memories, and have an amazing time!
