A weekend getaway into the woods sounds just about perfect for escaping from the hustle and bustle of city life.

I’m not talking about boring regular camping here. Let’s kick things up a notch and enjoy the ultimate glamping adventure at a ‘Getaway House’ in the woods.

With nature and the comforts of home combined, this is truly a one-of-a-kind experience!

Before we get started, let me be honest with you. Visiting a Getaway House was one of those trips I was particularly nervous about as I didn’t know what to expect. I like to plan things in advance and have itineraries ready for all our family trips – but this was an exception.

First of all, there was no address available online when I tried to look up the exact location. I had several questions in my mind like: How far away is it from the DMV area? Is it really located in Washington D.C.? What activities can we do there? With all these questions in my head and a thrill for adventure in my heart, I went ahead and booked the trip anyway. That’s the fun part about traveling – discovering new things along the way!

Getaway Cabin Location

The cabin is a 2-hour drive from Washington, D.C., close to Shenandoah National Park. If you are planning a stay to ‘disconnect to reconnect’, look no further. It couldn’t get any better than this place.

About Your Cabin

This lovely cabin has everything you need to make yourself feel at home, away from home.

An A.C. to keep you cool, a bathroom with a shower to keep you fresh, a bed to help you rest, a kitchen to keep your stomach full, a radio for entertainment, and a cellphone lockbox for you to stow away your devices and spend some quality time together.

You have the option to choose a cabin with single beds or a 4-person cabin with two queen beds. I will personally recommend you go with the second option, especially if you have little ones. The view from the bedroom windows is breathtakingly beautiful!

The kitchen offers all essential items you need to make a family meal, such as plates, cups, utensils, mugs, pots, pan, bowl, cutting board, knives, bottle/can opener, lighter, paper towels, dish soap, sugar, and coffee cream.

Cost per night ranges from $199-$369, depending on the season and day of booking. For booking and further details, visit the Getaway House website.

Another plus point: The bathrooms will be ready with clean towels and table cloths for your arrival.

Here are a few fun family activities you all can bond over:

• Play board games
• Read or tell campfire stories
• Cook kid-friendly meals together 
• Take a stroll out in nature
• Campfires and s’mores 
• Have a family-bonding group discussion 

Personal Recommendation – Things to bring

• Bring your own plastic cups, utensils, and plates. I personally prefer to bring these items with me anywhere I visit.
• Bring your own wine glass if you’re bringing a bottle or two.
• Bring flash lights to get your way through the night.
• Bring Clorox wipes to sanitize.
• Bring your preferred spices and seasonings as your cabin only has salt and pepper.

Things-To-Do in The Area

1. Visit the Getaway House Nature Trail

This gorgeous trail is near the entrance before you turn to Neptune Way. For your convenience, here is the exact location to put on Google Map if you are lucky enough to get any reception.

Wear comfortable shoes and carry light as you explore this natural beauty with your family.

2. Stop by at Prince Michel Vineyard & Winery

Prince Michel Vineyard & Winery is located along the foothills of the Blue Ridge, right at the core of Virginia Wine Country. This is the oldest and largest winery in Virginia and home to Tap 29 Brew Pup.

You can do multiple things here, from dining into taking a private or group tour. This unique winery offers accommodation as well, which means you can stay the night there.

2. You must try the Wine Slushy during the spring & summer seasons. It will be a memorable experience.
3. Enjoy a heart-warming meal or a charcuterie Pretzel at Prince Michel. Click here to view their menu.
4. Oh, don’t forget to make a stop at the LOVE Sign for that perfect Instagram click. It’s worth it!

3. Explore the Luray Caverns

One of the USA’s largest caverns, the Luray Caverns is located in Virginia just outside of Shenandoah National Park.

• You can let your kids experience rope challenges at RopeAdventure Park, located on the same plaza as Luray Caverns. Tickets cost $11 for kids over 48 inches and $7 for kids under 48 inches.

• You can also visit the fascinating Garden Maze and enjoy this one-of-a-kind group activity with your family. Group rates are offered for visiting the maze.

4. Take a Swim and Enjoy a Short Hike at Graves Mill Trail

This spot is a 14-minute drive away from our Getaway Cabins, and the water is absolutely perfect for a family swimming extravaganza. You do not need to purchase a ticket to visit this trail.

5. Enjoy Lunch at the Family Mexican Restaurant & Latino Store in town

1. It is located at 76 Main Street, Stanardsville, VA 22973
2. The restaurant opens from 10:30 am to 6 pm from Mon-Sat
3. This was a 6-min drive away from our Getaway Cabin

6. Skyline Drive at Shenandoah National Park

1. his is a 30-min drive away from our Getaway Cabin.
2. There Shenandoah National Park has four entrances routes, and Skyline Drive is the main road that runs along the length of Shenandoah. Click here for details about the location.
3. The Skyline Drive runs along the peak of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Shenandoah National Park. The drive offers a beautiful view of the mountains but be careful about speed limits and drive slow.
4. Skyline Drive is open 24 hours a day from Mon-Sun.
